Hong Kong’s Graphic Cigarette Warning Labels

May 17, 2014

The risks Americans take everyday with their health, puts future generations in danger of losing their existence. Our streets are paved with fast food, drowning in alcoholic beverages, and filled with cigarette smoke that is having a major influence not only on American men and women, but those in China as well. Hong Kong’s health conscious initiative has made an impact on its citizen that has helped preserve the progression of life. Hong Kong vaulted its way from being the world’s most exciting adventure playground for young tobacco advertisers, to a model tobacco control center for others to mock.

Chinese manufacturers have created stylish packaging that gives vivid warnings to their consumers to counteract government regulation. In the case of graphic health warnings on cigarette packs, the industry’s insistence that they have no effect is somewhat devalued by numerous resistance strategies. Graphic health warnings are intended to provide a strong and antagonizing message to smokers about the dangerous health consequences of tobacco products, while conveying the “quit” message every time a person reaches for a cigarette. Hong Kong has introduced its own set of graphic warnings, despite strenuous industry work to convince the government that they have no impact. By producing an unappealing outer skin for the cigarette packaging, it deters consumers from the product, while still drawing awareness to health concerns.
